Simon D James

Here’s an artist who came to see us last year with his first EP, which we politely declined because we felt it lacked a bit of emotion. And the least we can say is that Simon D James has certainly worked on the emotional side since then! He’s back with a second EP, which he’s releasing gradually (one every two weeks). First up is “Over & Over,” which opens with some very pleasant guitar sounds.

And the vocals are clearly much more controlled on this new album. They convey far more emotion. The artist has clearly been working hard all this time, and it shows. The song quickly gains momentum during the chorus, with female backing vocals adding another dimension to the track. We really appreciate the gradual build-up of emotion. Indeed, the second chorus is much less subtle, as is the female vocals, and the backing vocals intensify until they evoke a feeling of well-being. We forget that it’s the same phrase being repeated because the music does everything else and draws us into a magical musical world.

“Release & Repeat” takes us to a slightly more rock-oriented side of the artist.

Again, when you hear that punchy electric guitar sound, you understand that the artist wanted to convey a whole range of emotions, and that they’ve clearly put a lot of thought into it. And it resonates with us. We’re immediately drawn into this musical world with vocals that are more restrained and understated than on the previous track. Alternating between calm verses and incredibly powerful choruses, the song leaves us speechless. The final chorus is an explosion of auditory sensations, and we almost wish it were over!

Simon D James is an artist to watch. We appreciate seeing artists evolve, and when it’s in a positive direction, we should encourage them!
