It was in perfect French that The Moonlight Club, a wonderful group from Montreal, gave us the preview of their latest single “Simon & Nico”.

And we thank them for this incredible piece that seems to transcend time.

On first listen, it sounds like it came straight from the 80s, due to its muted arrangements and the reverb added to the voice.

The kind of songs you might have heard echoing in a jukebox, along Route 66, in an old-fashioned roadside diner with black and white tiles and thick red leather banquettes.

Well, this is our purely personal view of things, but the advantage of this song is that you just have to close your eyes while listening to it to immediately set the scene you want.

The song was written in 2016, and it is in 2020 that it will probably propel the group beyond Canadian borders.

The group describes the song as “A timeless ballad about lasting friendships, travel, hopes and dreams.

We don’t know exactly who Simon & Nico are, but we understand through the metaphors in the song that they travel as a duo – most likely musicians – with loves, hates, and struggles.

Once they’ve left, we wonder what they’re running from and where they’re going.“.

A truly mystical and legendary aspect, therefore, in terms of the lyrics, which fits very well with the retro feel deliberately given to the song.

A text that can speak to everyone, because we have all experienced moments when we have wanted to escape.

He spoke to me perhaps a little more than to other people, since my name is Nicolas and most people call me “Nico”.

It feels like the song is about me, a strange feeling but I admit, I quite like it!

With high-quality production, a catchy melody, and a mystical atmosphere, the song has everything to become a radio hit, and that’s all we can wish for them.

Another gem to discover in our Spotify playlist “December 2019“.
