9 Theory – Island Song (feat. Julian Temple)

Here’s the fourth track from 9 Theory’s second album, “Good Morning From A Nuclear Ghost,” released on the new Los Angeles label Elite Frequency Group (EFG). “Island Song” sounds a bit more singer-songwriter than other 9 Theory tracks, but it’s still peppered with the signature hard-hitting beats and electronic elements that make 9 Theory’s sound so distinctive, blending perfectly with organic strings, pianos, and acoustic guitars.

This song came about when 9 Theory and Julian Temple met at the Big Surreal Festival in Big Sur, California, a few years ago. They greatly admired each other’s work and wanted to collaborate, but Julian lives in New Zealand, where he leads the Julian Temple Band. Julian happened to be in San Diego the weekend after the festival before heading back to New Zealand, so the two arranged a meeting at 9 Theory’s studio at the time, and this song was written in just a few hours. The bass and Julian’s vocals were recorded late at night.

We really like it. Because there’s a lot of authenticity in this track, and several facets. Noble instruments like the piano and guitar are blended with more industrial, modern instruments. The mix is subtle and won us over. The unique, easily recognizable voice also transported us to this world of contradiction between the old and the new. “You are the last one left on an island.” Just by closing our eyes, we can already picture ourselves there, and we like that. We love invitations to travel. A great success.
