When you will hear the first few seconds of Carley Varley's new single "Shore", you might think "oh, what happened to her?". Yes, it's true, Carley has got us used to her unique guitar sound. Very good guitarist, the artist from Bournemouth, UK, and member of the IMC Family, therefore, surprises us with a new instrument: the ukulele. Following in the footsteps of Luna (our blog writer/singer-songwriter) who introduced her banjo Lizzy to her Twitch viewers, Carley offers us a new musical horizon, warmer, and a change from her usual releases. It's always great to try new things, right?
The young artist has already amazed us several times, whether in a pop genre with "Going Under" and "Fall", or more folk with "Since You Left". And this time, she dared a risky mix between pop and folk to take you to the coast. And she succeeded. The result is quite catchy, and I had never heard a banjo before in a resolutely pop-oriented production. The vocal harmonies, of which Carley Varley now seems to have mastered all aspects, are very elaborate and perfectly in tune. A bit like Dom Malin and his famous vocal gimmicks, we find in "Shore" parts of "pa pa pa" that will make you sing for several hours after listening to the song. And when a song has managed to get into your mind to the point that you can't get rid of it, it's a winning bet for the artist!
Fourth song from her upcoming "Seasons" EP, whose release has been postponed (we are eagerly awaiting it), "Shore" amazes with its skillful and perilous writing, combining puns and poetry, and it is sometimes difficult to make the difference between "shore" and "sure". Of course, this is voluntary and deliberate. And I find that incredibly brilliant. Carley improves her writing year after year and juggles words with astonishing ease. You might think it's just another breakup song, but it goes a little further than that simple idea, as Carley confides: "There are many breakup songs, I wanted to write about a couple working hard in their relationship and trying to make things work".
And I'm not going to lie to you: what I love about Carley Varley is her brightness. She always smiles and you never see her sad or down. And this positivism is very communicative. She makes others want to surpass themselves and believe in their dreams. Her songs talk about the journey of everyone but are also a huge source of motivation to go through the trials of life.
"Shore" is becoming my new favorite Carley song. Until the next release. Because it's often like that with this kind of artist. Each release is more breathtaking than the last, and one wonders what could stop them. About Carley, I'm not too worried, I know she'll make it. She grows, slowly but surely, gains in maturity and professionalism she explores different musical universes... She is never short of ideas, is always very creative, and has not finished surprising us. An additional gem to add to your playlists!
Reach out to Carley Varley
