Let's go back to Bournemouth, UK, to have a good time with Carley Varley. She joined the IMC Family thanks to her previous release "Miss Me", which left us speechless at the end of November.
"Fall", her new single released today, seems to mark a real turning point in the young singer's repertoire. Carley, like me, grew up with artists like Avril Lavigne, Paramore, or Taylor Swift, and their influence is strongly felt in this new single. However, a new instrument, hitherto absent from Carley's work, makes its appearance: the piano. And it has been highlighted in the mix and occupies all the place it deserves. It's the first time we've heard her sing with a piano, and I have to say that the wedding is working perfectly (not surprising for a newlywed, you might say). Perfect transition, since the song evokes, as the artist confided, "a story of falling in love intensely but not wanting to admit it, it is a classic movie scene, and you can picture the scenario as you listen to the song."
Very personal, therefore, this new release sticks to the singer's skin as an obvious consequence of her experiences in real life. Very emotional too, the song is carried by a magnificent and elaborate melody, and by lyrics revealing a certain fragility. Torn between enthusiasm and fears, the singer is like walking on a wire and could lose her balance at any time. And it's not always easy to write about that kind of confusion, until the last minute before taping, as Carley told us:
"It was the hardest song to write on the EP! I was still writing it in the studio on the last day! I think it's because it was a song based on my own experience, falling in love with my now-husband and I wanted to go from the angle of not wanting to fall in love and then naturally doing so, so the song had to flow and be written a certain way, which hopefully it comes across that way".
Between balancing act and intimate confessions, "Fall" bears its name very well, in every sense of the word. Because the song also implies the sequence of seasons, sometimes faster than what we expected. A double meaning which, in my humble opinion, shows the maturity that Carley has acquired over the years.
Her songs are becoming more and more precise, refined, and become more and more like companions on her road. This new single is actually the third track from her "Seasons" EP, which was delayed due to the pandemic. We're really looking forward to hearing the result of her evolution, but we will have to wait for a few more weeks for it to be ready. She just recorded the two final songs for it.
By the way, if you're in the UK, and if you live in the Bournemouth-Salisbury-Southampton triangle, don't miss Carley's show tonight at 7 pm, at The Kings Head, Redlynch. A great occasion for you to see that she's very comfortable when singing in front of a real audience. I had the chance to catch some of her livestreams, and would definitely love to be a part of the crowd, one day!
Reach out to Carley Varley
