Jay Madera’s Story
A muckraker at heart, Jay Madera writes songs in much the same way a journalist puts together a story: by observing, connecting the dots, and believing in the need for the truth to be heard. Madera’s music is not merely a byproduct of his crazed ambition to make sense of the world; it’s a distillation of how he sees the world.
Madera evokes many troubadours of the present and decades past, recalling the street-smarts of Richard Swift, upbeat witticism of Elvis Costello, the intense themes of Bill Fay, and the cutting poetics of Father John Misty. Madera displays a versatility that echoes his diverse emotional range. His affinity for dense and rollicking calls-to-arms complements his ability to craft other stirring, sparser works that reveal a journey toward self-improvement amidst an era of infinite content and mixed messages.
After his first singles, 2019's Curb Appeal and 2020's A House Divided, garnered national radio airplay and buzz from industry journalists, Madera signed to Los Angeles’ Pop Cautious Records and released his debut record, Anxious Armada, in March of 2021, produced by Mia Carruthers (The Bright Light Social Hour). In 2024 and 2025, he released a pair of tracks produced by Alex Hirlinger (Coastal Club) with performance by Curt Kiser (Carriers).
