I remember visiting Cork one day in April 2005. It's quite far back in my memory, but I remember it was a very gray day, the city was completely in the fog and you could hardly see anything. But I keep an incredible memory of it because of the colorful facades and the joie de vivre of certain inhabitants in the pubs contrast with this greyness.
The Irish have this ability to communicate naturally, to reach out to others, even if some of them seem quite shy at first sight. I think Fintan McKahey is a great example of that. Between two professional-looking photos on his Instagram, you will find the video announcing this new single in pre-save. Hilarious.
When I discover a new artist, it may seem crazy to you because it takes time, but I like to take a look at what he has already done before. And I must admit that his "Two Lifetimes Late" EP released in 2016 amazed me. The folk roots are very present. Then, the mini album "God Games" released in 2019, allowed Fintan to open his musical horizons to other landscapes, a little more pop, like on "Cold Hours, Pt. II". The mesmerizing "Amicable Ambience" left me speechless. 2020 seems to have marked a turning point in the singer's career, as the singles started to feel more confident and ambitious. I was blown away by the hypnotic "Goodbye".
Let's get back to 2022, with this new single "Amber", being released today and which allows the artist to get closer to his listener. Like an intimate confession, we dive into the personal universe of the songwriter, who addresses his partner cautiously, to admit: "I've found I'm useless without you". And this sudden shift in perspective comes from a particular event that pops up in everyone's life, as the artist explains:
"I was stuck in a rut for months, until my partner and I got the unexpected news that we're going to have a baby. After that everything just started flowing, it felt like I finally had something to say again, intensely inspired by awaiting our baby boy and writing this song for the woman I love.”
And this unexpected arrival visibly solidified a shaky relationship and rekindled the flame. In an absolute delicacy and sweetness, Fintan's voice delivers its message (almost an apology), on a magnificent and bewitching melody. Even in the presence of delicate drums, the song remains in a serene acoustic atmosphere that makes you want to close your eyes and escape into the delicious musical universe of the Irishman. The pedal steel led by Kealan Kenny adds a little relief to this hovering atmosphere.
Recently, Fintan McKahey caught the attention of Hot Press Magazine, naming him "Hot for 2021 artist". He also reached the top 5 of Irish Music Month of Hot Press' radio. With enormous potential, this friendly blond hasn't finished impressing you. An artist as we like them, to watch closely.
Reach out to Fintan McKahey
