Mat Hunsley’s Story
Newcastle-based songwriter Mat Hunsley blends folk and alternative influences into a sound uniquely his own. While balancing music with medical training, he first prioritized his career as a doctor. Now fully qualified, he steps into the spotlight with his debut album, supported by the PRS Open Fund. His music explores personal and universal themes, inviting listeners to reflect on the world around them.
Mat’s musical journey began in his late teens, inspired by artists like Ben Howard, Nathaniel Rateliff, and Bon Iver. Teaching himself guitar and exploring open tunings, he discovered colorful chords and melodies that formed the foundation of his songwriting. Now influenced by artists like Flyte, Adrianne Lenker, and Laura Marling, Mat’s music balances timelessness with modern resonance. Flyte’s fresh yet classic sound, Adrianne’s intricate guitar work, and Laura’s haunting melodies all weave into his work, shaping a distinct musical voice that is intimate yet expansive.
His upcoming debut album was self-produced in his home studio. Standout track "There’s Been A Death" reflects his perspective as a doctor in the struggling NHS, painting a stark picture of gridlocked hospitals and overworked staff. The song is both a heartfelt plea and a call for change, merging raw emotion with poignant storytelling.
With his debut, Mat Hunsley establishes himself as a reflective, authentic voice in folk and alternative music.
