The Narrative - Politics of Youth

December 02, 2022

What makes a good folk song? Good vocal harmonies, a frenzied guitar, a super catchy melody, relatable lyrics, and a simplistic but effective production. Good news! You'll find it all in The Narrative's new single.

The duo was born and raised on Long Island, NY, and is now based in Nashville. Does this remind you of anything? Yes, if you read us regularly, you know that Allison Leah also left New York for Nashville, the paradise of musicians. The result for all these artists who choose to change their horizons? Musical encounters that enrich their own talent.

The Narrative's new single, "Politis of Youth", released today on all major streaming platforms, is a multifacet gem.

First, the writing. The song really has an original point of view, as Jesse confides:

"This song is a message to my daughter. It's a promise to be honest, a warning of life’s loneliness, and a reminder of what’s important for when I'm gone. It’s a resolution to put fatherhood above all else."

Yes, this is a kind of warning about how tough life can be sometimes. You need to learn and get the right tools to face the trials that await you. And unfortunately, we don't learn about that in school. And if your parents didn't get you prepared for that, you may find yourself a bit isolated and disarmed in front of the whirlwinds of life.

But is it a sad song for all that? Not really! And this is what leads us to the second point: the melody! Catchy as hell, easy to sing along to, it's a good and energetic folksy tune, kind of which can give you a lot of energy on a foggy Monday morning, for example!

We were also really impressed by the way they perfectly master the vocal harmonies here. It is definitely precision work. It brings a warm and comforting side to the song.

Finally, the structure of the track is quite unusual. While most artists are struggling to find the perfect bridge (which is, let's be honest, the most delicate part of a song when it comes to creating it), The Narrative simply opted for a softer part, as if everything was suddenly stopping and falling apart. As a gap. As if the wonderful Dad wasn't there anymore.

And the final part, carried by wonderful stomps and claps, at a much slower pace, breaks all the songwriting codes. After all, putting the chorus another time with much more energy isn't mandatory. And we think this is the most wonderful trick of this song: it's able to captivate the listener's attention until the very last second. It's an effort that's pretty rare in songwriting these days, and it deserves to be highlighted.

Now, your biggest challenge is to decide whether you add this song to your upbeat and uplifting folk playlist or your chill one. Why not both? In any case, it's essential to save it to your favorites.
