Gavon Mitchell is part of this new generation of gifted musicians who amaze us with just a few notes. His new single "Tinnitus", released on March 1st 2022, convinced us from the first seconds.
The short mysterious intro (a bit like the Norwegian singer-songwriter Robert Post in "Got None" in 2005), quickly reveals a warm acoustic guitar and a perfectly mastered and very comfortable voice. Yes, Gavon's vocal performance is absolutely stunning. He perfectly masters the nuances, the intensities and delivers the emotions drop by drop, like a craftsman who would take care to finalize his work in the smallest detail.
The construction of the song is a real work of craftsmanship: it's absolutely fabulous and is based on the precise and calibrated distribution of power. A verse, then a pre-chorus that makes us believe that it's there, it's now! And then no. Another verse is followed by a pre-chorus and some electric guitar notes, like a break. What suspense! Is it now? Yes, we are finally there. A chorus as we like them.
The chorus is a real gem. Emotional and vocal flight at the same time and the first chills appear and we stay with our mouths wide open, telling ourselves: "oh wow okay, we didn't expect that". Powerful, and hard-hitting, the chorus of "Tinnitus" contrasts completely with the verses, more relaxed and restrained.
Speaking of the title, it's quite funny, since the song is totally the opposite. No, your ears won't hurt listening to this song, quite the contrary! I even think that this track will allow you to have a relaxed and peaceful weekend.
On the writing side, I think we can emphasize the quality of each line. The verses are very logical and structured and the chorus rhymes create a powerful and catchy hook. I wish I had known how to write like that at that age. And the contrast between the lyrics and reality is striking: the artist explains his difficulties in expressing himself and the fact that words don't mean much... while offering us a song that proves the opposite.
To me, that's just genius. Yes, there are artists who, without realizing it, create sorts of contradictions that give them a kind of unsuspected talent. Gavon Micthell is one of them. A highly focused word juggler.
"Tinnitus" is only Gavon's second single, but we believe it's only the beginning of a long and beautiful adventure. An artist to watch closely in 2022, as he has already announced the release of several singles.
