2023 will be a big year for the duo Meadowlark, from Bristol, UK. Their 3rd album is due out in early October, and the second single is already here. After the poignant "Goodbye", which marked their return as independent artists, it's the turn of "Full Me, Half You" to enchant our ears.
New independence, a new page being written, as the band says: "After 10 years, we're on our way back home". Oh sure, the duo is not unknown to the indie scene and can boast of having tens of millions of streams on Spotify. And we had them on our radar many times, when we had our radio station, we put them on several times a day. Speaking of our radio station, do you remember that we used to run a column called "Behind The Songs", where artists themselves introduced their music? Quite funny, Meadowlark started a podcast called "Behind The Songs" where they give more insights about their creative process! You can find it here. In any case, we are delighted that they have chosen IMC to be part of their new adventure and we thank them for it!
Because from the first listening to this new single, we were seduced by the wonderful musical harmonies and the warm folk atmosphere. Kate McGill and Daniel Broadley work hard to create a sound that is theirs. And this hard work is felt when we see the effort that has been put into the music video of "Goodbye", shot in freezing cold. You can feel their passion and their love for music immediately. As Kate said on their Facebook page in May 2022: "Nothing in the world makes me more present than writing a song. It’s my all-time favorite feeling. No amount of meditation seems to get me there as swiftly and as deeply. Not for a lack of trying on my part, though!" But it can also be heard in "Full Me, Half You" from the first seconds. You will probably need headphones to hear the delicate echo on the vocals of the first lines, but it works!
And then, this song is so relatable. Have you ever invested fully in a relationship without getting the same investment from your partner in return? Well, now you understand why this title is "Full Me, Half You".
As Kate and Daniel explain it better than we do, the song "is written about the draining and heartbreaking experience of giving your whole self to someone who hasn't fully processed their past yet, including past relationships - making it impossible to healthily start new ones. You can give and give to this person, but in the end, there's no point. That effort is going into a black void. Only until two people are whole and ready, can love survive and flourish."
You will also notice the great effort made on the instrumentation. From the discreet but enchanting little piano to the original percussion, every detail is intelligently thought out and placed. There is no room for chance when you already have millions of streams to your credit, fans have an expectation that must be fulfilled. And the exercise is successful.
