Mary Middlefield - Two Thousand One

November 30, 2022

Sometimes I just feel like the circle is complete. My own personal circle. I started promoting indie music in Two Thousand One. Which is the title of this wonderful song by Mary Middlefield, and also her birth year, as she says in the song. And here I am, in 2022, writing about songs I fall in love with, written by artists who were born when it all started.

So it's true that I discovered this song with a lot of nostalgia, looking a little towards the past. And this song is precisely about a relationship that now belongs to the past. A complicated and toxic breakup pushed Mary Middlefield to take her finest pen to write this little folk gem. The first words of the song were written in her bed, with her mom by her side. And the rest happened very quickly, as Mary confides:

"The process of finishing the track happened so quickly, it was recorded two weeks after it was written, but it's definitely one of my favorites to date. I love how the song offers emotions from the head and heart which people often get during difficult moments within a relationship. It's a fun, sad, folk song."

Yes, fun and sad at the same time. Moreover, from the first line of the song, Mary evokes ambiguities: "I have conflicting feelings when it comes to you". On an incredible guitar picking, precise and flawless, Mary wonders about what she should have done during this relationship, which, whatever happens, was apparently doomed to failure.

The melody grows with the song and becomes more and more powerful over time. From start to finish, the song's progression is logical, and the chapters are in the correct order. In the beautiful outro, the message is clear: "Sometimes I wish we never met". The song then ends with the word "Free", as if the page could finally be turned definitively.

A nice musical, emotional, and addictive gem that will delight your playlists!
