Our thoughts

Have you ever spent difficult moments lying on your bed, wondering if what you're hoping for will ever actually happen? And in those moments, have you ever asked yourself if maybe you're missing out on your true path while waiting for the impossible? Sometimes, we only realise it too late, once the person we loved is already gone. This song feels like a goodbye letter to someone who slipped away before we even had time to understand what happened.

And the artist behind it is Laura Lucas, one of only two female Australian artists who regularly return to IMC. The other one is Bree Rusev. Laura Lucas and Indie Music Center's story began in 2020 with her song "Fault Line". Since then, our hearts have been completely hooked on her magical musical universe. Somewhere between folk and pop, her sound always carries that wonderful sensitivity that brings chills sooner or later.

In "Did the Mountain Change You?", there’s so much to love. The delicate vocal harmonies in the chorus, the production full of beautiful little details you’ll catch with a good pair of headphones, and that melancholic melody that might even bring you to tears along with Laura. But instead of crying, maybe it’s better just to take in the moment. You’ve just found a stunning song, possibly one of the most touching love songs ever written, and you're among the first to witness the rise of a brilliant new star. Laura Lucas still has many surprises for us...

Laura Lucas's take on "Did the Mountain Change You?"

"It tells the experience of holding onto something that no longer exists and searching for the meaning in someone else’s experiences".

A bit more about Laura Lucas

Laura Lucas didn’t exactly "choose" music. It just kind of showed up, unpacked its bags, and made itself at home. Growing up in Canada with parents who always had music playing, she picked up a guitar at 10 and never really looked back. Songwriting quickly became her way to deal with the chaos of life. A quiet space where she could put her feelings, even if no one else ever heard the result. Then came 2019. Laura arrived in Melbourne for an exchange trip and something shifted. Suddenly, all those songs that used to stay hidden started asking to be shared. She jumped into the local scene, met some amazing people, and finally started letting the world in on what had been going on behind the scenes. Since then, she’s released two EPs, "Light The Candle, Hold The Mirror" and "The Dreamer", worked with artists like Lawson Hull and Rod Coote, and opened for legends like Harrison Storm and LANKS. Laura has a rare gift for writing songs that feel like they were ripped straight out of a diary you didn’t know you needed to read. Keep an eye on her. Something tells us she’s just getting started.

Lyrics

What time is it
Where you are right now
We don’t speak
So I ask myself

Is it cold
Down by the lake
Is there any chance
That your heart has changed

I need to know the answer
I think I know the answer

Did the mountain change you?
Did it go and make you, make you
Come alive
See the light
Wipe the dirt
From the corners of your mind
Did you cry
When you saw
Dancing colours in the sky

You must be
In the air by now
With your hair tied back
And your eyelids down

You didn’t ask
Me to wait
But I’m waiting
I’m waiting

Did the mountain change you?
Did it go and make you, make you
Come alive
See the light
Wipe the dirt
From the corners of your mind
Did you cry
When you saw
Dancing colours in the sky

Ooh
Ooh
Ooh

Did the mountain change you?
Did it go and make you, make you
Come alive
See the light
Wipe the dirt
From the corners of your mind
Did you cry
When you saw
Dancing colours in the sky

See the light
Wipe the dirt
From the corners of your mind
Did you find
An empty space
Space to fill with you and I
