Our thoughts

This track opens with a sound so simple you could probably recreate it with your hands on a table. A soft, steady rhythm that loops in the background like it could go on forever. And honestly, it might. That would make sense, since the title tells us right away: Nobody Knows the End.

Dylan Perkons first appeared on Indie Music Center in November 2023 with Good News. He’s back now with a song that’s more layered, more unpredictable, and somehow even more personal.

Why layered? Because this track moves through phases. The verses carry a weight, something quiet and a little uneasy. There’s melancholy in the tone, something slow and hesitant, as if the words are unsure whether they should be said at all. But then the chorus brings a little more light. The mood shifts. It’s subtle, but real. And just when you think that’s it, the final section changes everything. The track warms up, expands, and suddenly there’s a saxophone. Not thrown in for style, but woven into the track like it always belonged there.

That contrast shows up in the music video too. One moment, the screen is dim and introspective. The next, it opens up with the full band, lit in soft golds and subtle color. It’s not just about light and shadow. It’s about moments of clarity cutting through confusion, even for a second.

The lyrics, meanwhile, walk a line between reflection and hesitation. You hear thoughts that feel unfinished, like doubts voiced too soon, or questions that shouldn’t have made it to the surface. At times, you might even wonder if Dylan was okay while writing it.

We can reassure you. He’s doing well.

But this song reaches out to those who aren’t, to those who feel stuck in their own mental loop with no idea where the path ends. And instead of giving answers, it offers something else. Space. Patience. A small shift in the atmosphere that says, “keep going.”

It won’t solve your life. But it might be the kind of song that keeps you company while you figure it out. And if you make it to the end, you might just find yourself standing up without knowing why, or dancing on your chair, like the weight got a little lighter without asking permission.

Dylan Perkons's take on "We Don't Know the Ending Yet"

This song a bit more self-deprecating than I would usually write. I wanted the verses to really juxtapose the hopefulness of the chorus. I like songs that make you feel multiple things at the same time. I wrote this song about feeling like giving up but also about wanting to see what comes next. Hopefully that comes through in the music.

A bit more about Dylan Perkons

Dylan Perkons is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist based in Vancouver, originally from Santa Maria, California. His songs are shaped by quiet moments, late-night thoughts, and long drives, with echoes of The National, Big Thief, Neil Young, and John Prine. Acoustic guitars and vintage synths often find their way into the same track, without ever trying to do too much. Before putting out music under his own name, he played in Mind That Bird (Montreal) and Wired to the Sky (West Coast). While working on a new batch of songs, he felt a shift. This time, it felt more personal. Letting go of past names was a natural step. Over the years, he's worked with Canadian producers and engineers like Colin Stewart, James Benjamin, David Vertesi, and Jonas Bonnetta.

Lyrics

Waking up with no purpose
Sure I’ve got work but that’s not what I mean
In this age of information
I’ve been trading secrets
Gossip in my sleep
Someone promised the good life
But it’s nothing like I thought it would be
I held up my end of the bargain
Now I’m only asking for what is owed to me

Oh oh oh don’t forget
We don’t know the ending yet
Oh oh oh don’t forget
So many chances
A few more chances

I know I’ve made a career out of waiting
Out of nothing going quite how I plan
You say you deserve somebody amazing
So tell me why I’m your man
I’m pulling up late to the apartment
Making promises we know I wont keep
I feel guilty cause I know what you’ll tell me
That after all I’ve done, you still believe in me

Oh oh oh don’t forget
We don’t know the ending yet
Oh oh oh don’t forget
So many chances

A few more chances
So take it slow if you want to
Yea take everything thats yours
Beeause if I’m being honest it makes no difference

Oh oh oh don’t forget
We don’t know the ending yet
Oh oh oh don’t forget
So many chances
A few more chances
