Demelza - Little Me

March 02, 2021

Yeah, I know, it's hard to believe. But "Little Me" is Demelza's debut single. Looks like they already have years of working together behind. But no. First single, first banger.

Demelza is 5 friends who come from Birmingham. And they have the advantage of having a daughter as lead singer. It's quite rare in groups, and it brings an undeniable freshness to the song. Cherry's voice will remind you at times of voices such as that of Amy Lee, or Dolores O'Riordan. Without the dark side, because unlike these singers, Demelza's general energy is positive and full of light.

"Little Me" is "an ode to the things we have to leave behind in order to become who we are supposed to be", as Cherry said. The current health context has deprived us of many things, and it is becoming difficult to build. I am thinking in particular of children and teens, all of whose landmarks have been overturned by the pandemic.

"Imagine you by the sea", as Demelza says in his chorus. Being near the sea is quite commonplace when you think about it. But that was before the restrictions.

The song is a cry for hope, and let's hope the world of tomorrow is more open, more focused on what other people are feeling. In any case, we can only wish a nice and long road for Demelza, who are well on their way to showcasing the Birmingham indie scene as it should.

You won't find such quality around every corner. Everything is okay in this amazing track: the vocals, the melody, the energy, and the emotional power.

Already nearly 3K streams on Spotify since its release on Friday, and that's just the start. We can't wait to see what's next.

Included in our "Indie Rock" playlist.

Demelza's point of view

“Like so many others, the first lockdown gave me time alone with my thoughts, time to reflect on the chaos of the past few years. University was such a transformative time for me - I felt I'd changed so much in such a short space of time that I didn’t really know who I was or what I was doing. When life finally slowed down I realized that I had outgrown the places and people I clung so dearly to, and in holding on I was actually causing more hurt trying to fit into the place of 17-year-old me. Now I feel so proud of myself for stepping out of my comfort zone and letting go in order to become who I am now. And so I wrote Little Me; an ode to the things we have to leave behind in order to become who we are supposed to be, but also as a love song to myself, my life, and to Sam, Fred, Tom, and Louis whom I am so lucky to share so much of my time with. More about Demelza

Demelza announced their arrival onto the Birmingham music scene with a bang, packing out the renowned Sunflower Lounge for the liveliest set of Discover Birmingham 2020. Their riff-driven, festival-scale songs have drawn comparisons to the likes of U2 and Bombay Bicycle Club, earning them multiple sold-out shows in the country’s second city and the promise to be one of the most exciting new bands on the Birmingham scene. Following back-to-back headline shows in Birmingham, the band rounded up 2020 with the recording of their debut single Little Me, released last Friday.
