What if the best compass was actually our intuition? If you find that this world is made up of too many rules, restrictions, and too complicated things that could be much simpler, this song is for you.
Just crank up the volume and you'll feel a great sense of freedom wash over you. As if the sky had no limits, and as if everything was now possible, close your eyes and let the sun warm you and guide you to new horizons.
There is a French expression that says "it is in the old pots that we make the best jam". It would seem that Alexander Joseph just got it right. If you're a fan of writing, you probably still have a few poems, or torn-out diary pages lying in the bottom of an old box. For musicians, these are songs. Yes, songs that can sleep in the shadows for years, sometimes even decades, before finally being revealed to the public.
Alexander Joseph wrote "Summertime Compass" over fifteen years ago. In releasing it now, Alexander took a nostalgic leap back to a time when things were simpler and lighter: "It's one of the first songs I wrote during my university days over 15 years ago, and this version maintains the relaxed and playful vibe that was originally captured by the band I was part of at the time. The song delivers an optimistic message about the possibilities that lie ahead and arrives just in time for that summer BBQ or trip to the beach!"
The melody is incredibly perfect and takes us in just a few seconds toward a clear and cloudless horizon. Whether during the verses or the choruses, we shake our heads from left to right without even realizing it. And when you start clapping too...everything is perfect! And what about Alexander's voice. Warm, like that of a friend who would be there to reassure you and support you no matter what happens.
I immediately loved the bright and sunny side of this song. We live in an ultra-connected world, across many screens, and we sometimes forget that the best times are those spent together. And, yes, why not, around a BBQ, or a campfire on the beach. The simplicity, innocence and carelessness that reign in this song make it an essential hymn for this summer.
Some songs are very powerful. Although this one has been sleeping for a very long time, it comes out of its old box at the right time. It's as if it allows us to forget the last two years. No more pandemic. No more war. No more school shootings. Just a moment of escape, full of sun and warmth.
I'm not very surprised that Alexander Joseph is able to federate around such an optimistic song. The artist has already given a lot of himself in the past. He is a generous person, and his generosity knows no bounds. It led him to Tokyo, to the Paralympic Games, where he was able to fully combine his love for sports (and more particularly tennis) and his love for human beings.
More recently, he donated all proceeds from the song "Now Or Never" (also covered by IMC) to the British Paralympic Association. Alexander Joseph is far from being a solo artist. He always plays as a team. Whether with others or for others.
This is why, dear readers, it is important to understand that by reading this article, and by streaming this song, you are not only supporting a human being but a whole community that he has managed to federate over the years.
“Summertime Compass” deserves lots of streams, a lot of playlist adds, and a lot of love. And it's definitely one of our favorite tracks so far this year.
Reach out to Alexander Joseph
