You Should Really Know These Songs (May)

May 15, 2021

Hello, I'm Luna Keller and you're reading "You Should Really Know These Songs", a monthly blog post where I highlight some of the great indie music from my all indie show/podcast. Todays selection is a wonderful mix of authentically beautiful songs, some have made me dance others cry... lets see if you can guess which is which!

Ben Meyers - Thunder

This one is a real banger released by London-based folk-rocker Ben Meyers on the 30th of April. With an amazing groove, a stellar vocal performance, and a great hook „Thunder“ will have you singing and dancing along in no time. Meyers performance is bold and unapologetic, just like the premise of the song - looking for something more in life. Whether that is love or something you’re passionate about is open for interpretation, giving us the chance to find ourselves in the narrative. It’s one of those songs you put on in the car while driving away from the ordinary - an awesome soundtrack for a new adventure. Listen to „Thunder“ here:

Tasha Blackmore - Last Goodbye

Tasha Blackmore is a wonderfully relatable storyteller based in the UK. She speaks from her experience to ours with great honesty. Her latest release „Last Goodbye“ faces the decision to cut ties with someone or something that isn’t good for her. „I know you won’t change, you’ll stay this way. I am worth more, so long, this is my last goodbye“, it’s a clear message of self-love and strength as she lets go of what’s holding her back. The song blends pop and country elements creating an organic and yet modern sound. The hooks are really amazing, and repeat almost like a mantra that grows with the song. DREUW - Nothing

Stunning might not be a big enough word for this song. It has a deep emotion that runs through you and washes over you in a truly cathartic way. DREUW sings directly from the heart, and when he hits the high notes in the chorus goosebumps are guaranteed. „Nothing“ carries itself in beautiful layers both musically and lyrically with a message of breaking open to realize that we are already whole on our own. It’s one of my favorite indie-folk songs that have been released this year, listen to it here:

Hawk and the wild - Lay Down Low

With this release, the Swedish singer-songwriter Hawk and the wild brings a comforting message of peace and togetherness. In these times where people are divided by so many ultimately meaningless things, he encourages us to lay down the argument. It’s a call to reconnect with the earth, ourselves, and the people around us. The song has a light folky feel with beautiful guitars and harmonies that build into crescendos with the rest of the instruments. I am a big fan of the drums that create an awesome groove and add a new dynamic layer to the arrangement. „Lay Down Low“ is the perfect indie summer hit, a soundtrack for joy and human connection.
