It was last November when we discovered Dylan Dunlap with "If That's Alright". The artist comes from Studio City, Los Angeles, near the famous Universal studios. An inspiring setting that allows Dylan to comfortably write and compose sublime melodies of which only he has the secret. And it's with this new single, "Who Would Have Thought", that he's back, while Spring is coming, like a ray of sunshine. And in Europe, after several weeks of rain, we really need a ray of sunshine like Dylan!
The song opens with a calm first verse, where Dylan's voice, reminiscent of Gavin James', is perfectly placed on an acoustic guitar. The song takes on its full dimension during the chorus, which reveals beautiful soaring in the treble. Dylan controls his voice, and there is work behind the scenes, that can be heard.
The second verse sees the appearance of the drums, discreet, but effective. The second chorus, more powerful, carried by divinely well-placed choirs, confirms our choice. We are clearly on a nugget that will make us have a great weekend.
The bridge, which is smoother, lets us predict an explosive final as we like them. And it is indeed the case. Our ears are wrapped like cotton. Dylan takes care of our ears, thanks to a percussive melody, which stays in mind, and wonderfully well-written lyrics.
The artist told us about the genesis of the text: “I never thought I was supposed to be with someone until I met Marisa. She brings out the best parts of me that I didn't even know existed and helps me find the beauty of my daily mental struggles. Basically, the song was written after we had gotten our heads out in a restaurant all day until the waiters got mad. Love that it's not just a love song about her, but about my hometown. Meeting her helped me fall in love with Los Angeles for the first time."
References to his favorite place are present throughout the song, especially in the chorus, like a hymn to California. A real pleasure, which can be listened to endlessly, without getting tired.
