What’s more painful, knowing that someone you love is gone, or not knowing if they are going to make it? It’s a tough one to answer, but the worst part of not knowing is not being able to move on, since everything is possible still. And it’s that heart-wrenching place of worry and uncertainty that indie artist Alto Key is taking us with his latest release “waiting”. It’s one of those songs that hits you a little harder with every listen as you pay attention to the story that unfolds between the lines. 

The atmospheric alternative pop track creates a dreamy feeling that builds and falls with the story it tells. We are transported to a moment of loss with thoughts racing and conflicting to process what is happening. It’s a problem that has no solution “I can’t wait any longer but I can’t just let you go”, there’s no painless way to move forward. Alto presents the story in a really raw and authentic way, the lyrics feel like they could be real thoughts - and hit you with that honesty in all the right ways. The song actually draws from real life experience, “I wrote 'waiting' at a difficult time in my life where a family member was in hospital. It's all about that limbo state where there is no clear end in sight.”, the singer says. 

The heaviness of the subject is turned cathartic by the driving and floating arrangement. The chorus beats like a heartbeat lifted by layers of synths and vocals, falling beautifully into the more toned down verses just to grow again. It creates a great dynamic that pulls on you with the back and forth of the story creating a perfect symbiosis between music and lyrics. My favourite thing about the song from a musical standpoint are the layered vocals, the harmonies are stunning and you can discover a new one with every listen, if you pay close attention.

“waiting” shows a more vulnerable side of the UK based based songwriter, who shares a painful part of his own story through this beautiful piece of music. It comes across as truly authentic and relatable - becoming one of those songs that can become your on repeat lifeline through a really tough time. I’m definitely waiting for whatever he’s got in store for us next.
