Remember, a month ago, IMC introduced you to "Offbeat", the very upbeat single that marked the return to the music of New Zealand artist Nur Peach, after several years of hiatus. It was also featured on Episode 3 of our "Indie Hour" podcast.
Good news! She's back with "Cover To Cover". Disclaimer: This is a lot more pop than what you're used to hearing on IMC.
Simply put, this new song is about a new beginning, a rediscovered freedom, as Nur says:
"Cover To Cover is about the excitement of setting out into the world on my own for the first time. It's a celebration of newfound independence, of taking positive risks and taking your life into your own hands. I wanted to capture this feeling of excitement in the way the song sounds- that feeling of walking through the city at night. Of being powerful, invincible, and at the start of something extraordinary. Just like how I felt writing the song."
We have all experienced a radical change, whether in our work, our family, and more particularly, in the case of this song: the change in our place of life. I went through this stage in 2010 when I left the mountains of eastern France to settle in the west, facing the ocean. The energy triggered by this change of scenery is enormous. And if you haven't done it yet, or are still hesitating to get started, I highly recommend you do. If you want to change, sometimes you have to follow your instinct. Our singer-songwriter did not hesitate, even if she still winks at those who haven't moved: "To all the ones we leave behind, I won't forget your faces", as she sings in the bridge.
Nur Peach is a creative artist who draws inspiration from everything around her, be it nature or just a city in motion, as she explains very well:
"Growing up in the Coromandel Peninsula, I was always surrounded by nature. When I wrote Cover To Cover, I had just moved to Auckland City Center for my first year of a university degree. I wrote the song while walking home to the hall of residence I was living at, at the time. It was just getting dark, and I was inspired by the bright lights and so much activity even at this time of the day."
With green meadows, lush forests, and magnificent beaches, the Coromandel Peninsula is like a little paradise on Earth. We understand why the artist says she is very much inspired by nature. By bringing into play her memories, her experience, and her creativity, the singer gives everything in "Cover To Cover". I can't explain why, but her haunting voice is able to transport me in just a few seconds. And this kind of happy pop anthem reminds me of my younger years. When I was full of innocence, and when I too, was inspired by big cities full of movement.
With a super catchy chorus, perfectly precise vocal harmonies, and a production worthy of the greatest artists, Nur Peach scores another point!
