Matt Saxton - It's Only Now That I Know

March 01, 2022

We often say that less is more. When we saw the lyrics of this song, we doubted. We wondered if there were any lines missing. Because the text is quite short when you think about it. The artist wanted to focus on music and he was right. Some emotions are sometimes easier to convey through music than through lyrics.

UK-based artist Matt Saxton uses his vocal power on this song to enchant us, combined with a very catchy melody. It will not be very difficult for you to sing along!

"It's Only Now That I Know", his latest single, brings together some elements that we appreciate at IMC. Like the combination of guitar and piano. I believe that these two instruments, on their own, are enough to convey strong emotions. Add powerful electric guitar and amazing vocals and you'll get an amazing mix that moves mountains.

About the song, Matt said: "At some point in our lives we look back at the past and hopefully recognize the mistakes and the successes. As a mature artist, this song is, therefore, a reflective look at the past." And I think that's why the song spoke to me so much.

Certainly, I am not yet an old man who will soon end his life. I will soon be 35 years old and I find myself thinking about the past more and more often and there are obviously things that I would have done differently, "now that I know". There are also times when I realize that I don't have any friends my age. I get along better with much younger people, who teach me things that become too complicated for me to understand (especially about digital technologies), and also with older people, who may have been led to commit mistakes and learned from them (very useful to others).

But let's get back to the song. There are certain elements like the discreet organ which make you think of a little more country sound. We usually try to avoid these sounds because our American friends can hear them all day long if they turn on their radio. But we are not completely stubborn and are open, as long as the strong emotions are there.

The way the song is constructed is quite original. Some will tell you that it's a bit repetitive. I would tell them that... it is scalable. And above all, it triggers a rather rare sensation: time flies. For a song over four minutes long, you don't realize how quickly time flies, carried away by the magnificent riffs of electric guitar and that catchy piano.

And through the voice of Matt, confidence slowly installs, which makes us want to listen to him until the end. A kind of FOMO (this syndrome that mainly affects social media users who are always afraid of missing something). Yes, Matt Saxton is like a trusted uncle. This music-loving uncle, whom I didn't have, and who has lots of exciting stories to tell. By the way, don't hesitate to dig a little deeper and listen to "Animal", which contains magnificent vocal harmonies with a kid.

The Brit realizes that time is not unlimited, and writes down his most beautiful ideas, his most beautiful memories, and sometimes his concerns. With an astonishing maturity and sincerity of writing.

And if, like me, you like to dive back into memories, you will appreciate his first album, "Surrender to Happiness", released in 2005 and which is full of little nuggets. "Brave Face" is absolutely stunning.
