Hugo Valentine - Change

December 01, 2020

Well. Do I really need to introduce Hugo Valentine to you? The artist is on his fourth visit to the Indie Music Center, and it is always with great pleasure that we welcome him. A guarantee of quality, Hugo Valentine's music is always remarkably worked. On YouTube, we found a live version of this song, from 2 years ago. Further proof that our favorite Englishman works his songs down to the smallest detail before recording them in the studio. Soul in the voice, and rhythm in the skin, Hugo Valentine is a genius of writing. On his last visit he was nicknamed the man with the magic hat. We could also call him "The Remedy Man". If you are going through difficult times then subscribe to the artist on Spotify. You will inevitably find a song there that will cheer you up. Because it is a bit his specialty. Always in an extremely colorful universe full of good humor, Mr Valentine once again offers us an explosion of auditory flavors in this new single. And for his last release of the year, we can say that "Change" comes timely, after all we've been through, recently. Always with a classic, chic, and elegant side, which sometimes reminds of Coldplay, Elton John, Keane, or all those who make us dream with a piano, Hugo Valentine started to make his place on the indie music scene. In any case, with us, he found his place. 4th time, but for sure, it won't be the last!

Included in our "Indie Pop" playlist, and of course, you will now hear this amazing track on the Indie Music Radio.

Hugo Valentine's point of view :

In a rare situation for me, they [the lyrics] came pretty much immediately, with coherent meaning. I think the message for me was clear from the outset - grow up, change, be who you want to be, but don't forget who you really are. It sounds corny but has been such an important thread in my life, something so pertinent. I went to the studio later that day to lay down the demo. Beyond the core message of the song, it's also a song about realising that things are not as they seemed when you were a child. It's a moment to reflect on those childhood memories and view them from your adult self's perspective. Most children are very impressionable, as I certainly was, but there comes with that a sort of bliss of life, a lack of knowledge and understanding of the difficulties and complexities of life - 'Do you remember the strange days, when we were young and free' - this feels bittersweet when you reflect on it as an adult.

Born and raised in London, multi-instrumentalist Hugo Valentine has finally arrived on the scene as a singer-songwriter. His sound captures the essence of British and in particular London culture. His songs are of a catchy nature, always packed full of lyrical depth and colour, and his influences are widespread, ranging from Coldplay to Elton John, Alicia Keys to Queen to Arctic Monkeys, David Bowie to Radiohead, among many others. Growing up with a varied musical upbringing, Hugo Valentine all began when he taught himself ‘twinkle twinkle little star’ at the age of four on a toy piano that his grandmother had bought him and started taking piano lessons in his London home. At the age of 10, Hugo was admitted into the Royal College of Music junior department and remained there for four years where he was trained in classical music and, above all, the piano. Hugo’s homegrown, self-taught approach has carried him through to this point. Using production initially as inspiration, and then as a way of getting his ideas across, he now has the tools to take his songs almost to their final stages of completion. In fact, this is how ‘A Nation Of People’ EP came about - four tracks originally written for piano which he took to the next level with his exciting approach to creative production.
