What I love about Emmrose is her fascinating universe. The first 20 seconds of "Ragdoll" seem straight out of a slightly worn music box. You just have to close your eyes ... and it's like finding yourself in an attic full of dust and cobwebs. Emmrose has this gift of being able to draw a complete universe just with a few notes, before even starting to sing!

And when her voice comes in, suddenly the song lights up, and we're happy to say "ah, Emmrose, I missed you". Because this artist is a creative genius. Each of her songs is like a chapter in a book of fantastic and mystical stories.

"Ragdoll" is no exception to the rule and gives us this very dark, almost Halloween-worthy backdrop (hey, it's next month, isn't it ?!).

And yet, the writing theme isn't all that fun. And I must admit that it spoke to me because I was my mother's puppet for over 30 years. Manipulation, low blows, lies, are all tools that are easy to use for the manipulator, but sometimes difficult to detect for the person who's in the grip... until the day you just open up your eyes. That's what Emmrose has done:

"Ragdoll was really inspiring to write. The lyrics encapsulated the feelings I had going through a really toxic relationship, and how I felt like I truly wasn’t respected and trusted. I imagined this song to take a post-breakup place. Ragdoll feels like the right mindset when you are leaving a toxic partner. It’s important to stand your ground and show the other person that you won’t put up with their toxicity anymore."

This is what I did, and I feel so much better now. Maybe this song will speak to you too. Either way, Emmrose managed to move us, once again, with her powerful words. And as she says, the hardest part is not realizing that you have been a toy. It is to succeed in saying NO every time the manipulator comes back to try to get you back:

"The second verse was about the inevitable return of the toxic ex, and how they might say they've changed, but really they are even worse. In my experience, it was really hard not going back, but in this song, I wanted to portray strength and humor with the line: But now I’m just grinning at what you've become."

It is indeed a very unpleasant experience, and I admit that I found some support in this song. As if I suddenly felt less alone. Like a friend whispering comforting words in your ear when you need them most.

Thank you Emmrose, your poetry, your talent, and your incredible emotional power have worked again. The only little problem I found with this song was its length. It's a bit short. But it's so good! And after all, if you want to get rid of evil, you might as well not dwell on it too much, right?

Lyrics

Told me you wanted to stay,

But you never show me that you cared anyway,

And I'll say you want me,

You’ll have me,

Then you’re done,

Take it or leave it,

Ain’t it just fun,

To throw me like one of your toys,

You think that you own me controlling my noise,

And I'll take all of your bullets one by one,

And you’ll say you’ll fix me,

Under your thumb,

I’m not some kind of rag doll,

I’m not your marionette,

You won’t get away with this,

I’m stronger than you think,

You caving to me with your knees on the floor,

Cause I got you craving for what we had before,

How you regret the damage what’s been said and done,

But now I’m just grinning at what you’ve become,

I’m not some kind of rag doll,

I’m not your marionette,

You won’t get away with this,

I’m stronger than you think,

I’m not some kind of rag doll,

I’m not your marionette,

You won’t get away with this,

I’m stronger than you think,

You told me you wanted to stay,

But you never show me you cared anyway,

And I see you want me,

You’ll have me,

Then you’re done,

Take it or leave it,

Ain’t it just fun.
